A dear client of mine kindly shared this book with me. I am always eager to understand my clients better and therefore, anything that have impacted their lives would be of interest to me.
With the recommendation of the Surrender Experiement, the first thing I noticed was how slim it was. The author has a simple message, and he got to the point. And, oh boy, did he! I don’t know if others would feel the same way, but this book was more like an educational textbook rather than a biographical novel.
I found myself studying it as I would study for a test. I wanted to make sure I understood everything even though I know that I wouldn’t because each individual’s supernatural experience is unique. It reminded me of An Autobiography of a Yogi as I started studying through the first few chapters, which, interestingly enough, was mentioned somewhere along the course of his story.
I highly recommend this book if you are ever tasked with a choice of title for a book club, and below is the lazy boy version if ever you would like someone’s personal notes on the subject of the Surrender Experiment.
Chapter 1 Not with a Shout – But with a Whisper
- What happened was so subtle, so faint, that it could easily have passed by without being noticed.
- It was not a shout but a whisper that my life was thrown into utter turmoil and transformation.
- I noticed I was uncomfortable with the silence and found myself thinking of what to say next.
- I noticed that I was uncomfortable. For the first time in my life, my mind and emotions were something I was watching instead of being.
- There is a complete separation between my anxious mind and me, the one who was simply aware that my mind was anxious.
- The entire process of just “being aware” was practically instantaneous.
Chapter 2 Getting to Know Me
- “Why is this voice talking all the time?” If I see something, I’m instantly aware of seeing it. Why does the voice have to tell me that I see it and how I feel about it?
- I now had two driving forces awakened inside regarding this newly found voice in my head. One was the desire to shut it up. And the other was of pure fascination and yearning to understand what this voice was and where it came from.
- Who am I that notices all this mental activity?
- If the Inner Voice could speak in Spanish and immediately understood what it was saying, then you are fluent in Spanish.
- With this awareness, you can learn so much about your-‘self’.
- I could see how much fear of rejection and non-acceptance was being expressed through that mental dialogue. I never lost this perspective of watching a voice talking inside. It was obvious it wasn’t me – it was something I was watching.
Chapter 3 The Pillars of Zen
- I had been forced to read and study so many books in school. I now had my hands on a book that answered some real questions.
- Three Pillars of Zen by Philip Kapleau
- You have to work, a.k.a Meditate.
- We were overcome by the quiet and beauty of the place. It dawned on me that this would be a good place to do some meditation.
- The whole notion of meditation was so meaningful to me that, from the start, it was like a secret experience.
Chapter 4 Absolute Silence
- When you come back from nowhere – Everything is different. No complaints, no mental dialogue about what to do about it. There was simply awareness, completely at peace with what it was aware of.
Chapter 5 From Absolute Peace to Absolute Turmoil
- Even thoughts faded away before reaching my seat of awareness.
- All I remember experiencing at that time was that unwavering sense of one-point intention.
- I had to learn to use my intellectual mind without disturbing the peace that I now loved more than life itself.
- Throughout the day, I would sit wherever and whenever I had the opportunity. Only a small part of my life was about the outer experience.
- It never dawned on me that I could try leaving my outer experience in order to maintain the inner stillness.
- Focusing on energy flow was not something I was doing; it was something that was happening by itself.
- There was another major change. I was not experiencing a constant flow of energy rising up within me to the point between my eyebrows. Forcing my attention to that point. If I was looking at something, it felt like I was concentrating my gaze on my brow rather than through my eyes.
- The pull of my attention to the point between my eyebrows became both my teacher and my friend.
- I knew what it felt like to get away/separate from my personal self. My intention was firm and resolute – no matter what it took or how long it took – I was going to find my way back beyond.
- It is easy to fall back into 3D living because we are in survival even though we are doing something as simple as talking to a friend. You come back as an identity of self rather than as an identity of being
- Exploring states of inner peace causes your outer world to sometimes fall into chaos. Although we might seem to see it as chaos, it is actually your outer world re-organizing itself to help you achieve outer peace.
- Your personality ‘Sheila’ wants her own experience in the 3D. Controlled by the knowledge of her mind. The ‘being’ that is the I Am wants the connection to the source. How can we get these two energies to get along and cooperate?
Chapter 6 South of the Border
- When the two get along: 1) Your identity ‘Sheila’ will start picking up signs. 2) You start to feel less fear and separation and more trust and cooperation in the universe. 3) People respond to you better and you to them. 4) You are open to new adventures, and life isn’t something to be afraid of. 5) Following into the flow and trusting.
Chapter 7 Disconnecting the Panic Button
- I started to get uncomfortable, but I was not about to give in to the scared person inside.
- Scared, vulnerable, and self-conscious. Everything in me wanted to end my yoga session immediately and open my eyes and see the danger I had gotten myself into
- The core of self-discipline I had developed for ridding of that scared person inside of me.
- The command of steel came from behind my fears.
- When drama/ fear unfolds around you. Take a deep breath and command a state of relaxation in the midst of fear.
- Watch that voice, you can often hear it pleading for permission to connect with the outside world in times of perceived danger while in meditation.
- It is always the scared person inside who is holding you back from where you so desperately want to go.
- To me, it was like an act of commitment: Which do you care about, inside or outside?
- When you stop giving control to that scared person that runs your life, you will start to experience the beauty that you otherwise would have missed.
- You will start to thank life for all your days and will start to feel special.
- When you are within a new experience, oftentimes that ‘self’ talk within gets very quiet
- Understands that having new experience breaks the cultural mould that we are programmed to believing
- This was another one of life’s lessons; The joy of helping people
- Life has more to give us than we could ever take for ourselves
Chapter 8 Unexpected Inspiration
- When you eliminate the physical expectations of your external environment, you also liberate yourself from mental and emotional pressures.
- Work from a natural logic of a clear, unpressured mind
- Let your writing become your flow; no worrying or second-guessing your thoughts this becomes like meditation.
- Take your ‘self’ out of your writing and let unbridled inspiration flow. i.e. do not analyze what you write.
- When artists create a work, they first get the inspiration, then they bring it down to the physical plane.
- There is a clear difference between creative inspiration and logical thought. Inspiration comes from a deeper place, in total silence with no effort or commotion.
Chapter 9 The Promise Land
- The feeling of going through the woods onto the interior field (sudden openness) was wonderful.
- The feeling of expansiveness
- Deciding to buy the plot after living in his van for 6months.
- Ask yourself what would be the maximum number you can afford to pay for the land and leave the rest to the nature of the universe, and if that was not enough, then it wasn’t meant to be.
Chapter 10 Building a Sacred Hut
- There is a real back-to-earth feeling watching actual trees being turned into the backbone of your house.
- “Where were all the unbelievable experiences coming from?”
- Deeply touching experiences come from the most unexpected places.
Chapter 11 Get Thee to a Monastery
- The Invisible Hand
- Who was I? The one watching the voice of the mind?
- When you ask your’self’ that question, down comes to that invisible hand grabbing you up.
- Showing beauty and peace not only existing in the inner state but also in the outer state
- It shows you how a monastic lifestyle comes easily to you.
Chapter 12 When the Disciple Is Ready, the Master Appears
- When you resign yourself from life, food, sleep, socializing, etc. It would indeed suppress the ‘self’ made personality. However, it does not go away but rather resigns ‘himself’ to the intense discipline. The physical also needs to co-exist.
- I would relate to God as associated with that place hidden deep inside of me.
- I often felt that field of energy flow from the point between my eyebrows, down my arms, and out the centre of my palms. Could spirit be another world for this inner energy flow?
- Self Realization
- Is going beyond your personal self to find your spiritual self
- Realize the nature of the one who ‘watches’.
SECTION II – The Great Experiment Begins
Chapter 13 The Experiment of a Lifetime
- Setting and feeling a beauty of energy flowing around my body but the author mentioned wanting a breakthrough of where he wanted it to go.
- Also, his personality always returned to the moment he returned and became active.
- The motivation behind the mental chatter I believe, is survival
- Your evolutional habit for survival dictated your preferences towards or against something.
- Our mental preferences were creating much of the mental dialogue. Taking control of everything in your life.
- Practice accepting what the flow of life is presenting you.
- I.e. Stop complaining about the weather and accept it.
- If life unfolds in a way separate from your personal preference, would you choose to accept it?
- Would you let life be in charge?
- I would question while accepting why is that attracted to my life and learn from it should there be something for me to learn.
- “If life brought events in front of me, I would treat them as if they came to take me beyond myself.”
Chapter 14 Life Takes Charge
- In times of uncertainty, that mind’s voice can be very strong
- Whenever something triggers that ‘self’ voice to go nuclear/ballistic a.k.a panic mode, then it would be the perfect opportunity to get it out of the driver’s seat.
- Rather than flight/fight, now would be the perfect time to surrender to what life is bringing you.
Chapter 15 The Prince and the Pauper
- Building a relationship with someone is about getting to know them inside that external facade.
- When life throws you something that threatens you – you have to ask why.
- Why would that particular issue threaten me so much?
- You would realise that there is an opportunity for ‘self’ realization
- An opportunity to let go of another armour of your personal reality (personality)
- “Driving to the exam, I had felt as though life was asking me to willingly let a part of me die that day. But now I realized that life was asking me to get out of the way and let her do her thing. I was so glad I was willing to take that risk.”
Chapter 16 Following the Invisible into the Unknown
- Surrender
- Amazingly powerful work
- It often engenders the thought of weakness and cowardice. In our case, it requires all the strength we have to be brave enough to follow the invisible into the unknown.
- Surrendering to universal guidance comprises two distinct steps:
- Letting go of reaction. (no ‘like’ or ‘dislike’)
- With a sense of clarity from #1, look to see what is being asked of you by the situation unfolding in front of you.
- What would your actions be if you were not influenced by the perceptions of your personality?
Chapter 17 My First Job Interview
- Allow yourself to be in awe of what the universe is leading you to learn and overcome
- Being in awe does not mean you need to self-glorify your newfound lesson and achievements just learnt to celebrate internally.
- In teaching a class, keep a disciplined self-practice but keep yourself open when the time to teach in class.
- Teaching this alternate way of thinking to a yoga class isn’t difficult the difficult bit is surrendering and allowing myself to be led by the universe and dis-associating “self” from the ‘I am’ (“your”).
- The practice of meditation
- The practice of yoga
Chapter 18 Letting Go of the Hope
- People will find you despite your best effort to protect your solitude.
- The Sandy Boone Story!
- In meditation, the deeper you go, the more your breath slows down until, naturally, it stops flowing.
- “For the first time, I questioned whether more and more discipline was going to take me where I so desperately wanted to go.”
- I no longer saw the lower aspect of myself as the enemy.
- That which the problem is actually the solution
- Have compassion for the lower field of self.
- Your soul comes in a field and form that exists in both higher and lower planes. Your journey requires the love and acknowledgement of both to exist and to be acknowledged.
- “The psyche is a person with feelings and throughs, hopes, fears and dreams. He is not to be shut out or constantly told to shut up.
- I have been achieving heights by pushing down on the lower energies. But that was a form of suppression. I had to learn to channel upwards instead of pushing them away from me. I eventually began to realise the true purpose of yoga – Done properly, yoga is the science of channelling all energies upwards until they merge together at the highest point – Oneness –
- The point of the mind ‘self’ and the noise isn’t about shutting it up or trying to lock it away – it is about loving it into the light of your conscious awareness but not needing to react to it.
Chapter 19 Acceptance, Acceptance, Acceptance
- Preference Driven Mind
- Our thoughts are created from a preference-driven mind
- Our preference-driven mind is controlled/programmed by a preference-driven society
- Social preference is, in fact, created by the elite
- It was during the building of the cabin that I first started the ritual of offering my work up to the invisible force that was guiding me.
- Life is capable of teaching us so many things as long as we know how not to let our ‘self’ stand in our way.
- When something is being channelled through you to do something, you need only watch the continuous stream of inspiration turning into a powerful moment.
- You are not the one doing this, you are just aware of it.
- Had I listened to my own mind – none of this would have happened. By following the flow of life, instead of my own preferences, I was not a carpenter, a teacher and now a published author.
- The sharp line that I had drawn between the spiritual and non-spiritual had begun to fade. The energy I experienced while teaching my classes was the same energy I had sitting with my meditation. In my meditation, that energy would flow upwards and leave me away from my everyday self. When I stood in front of a class, the very same energy would explode into a passionate, heartfelt lecture.
Section III From Solitude to Service
Chapter 21 The Call of a Living Master
- It was the summer of 1973, and in the most unlikely of places, my heart centre was learning to open. I was being taught how to serve. This was not something I would have come up with on my own.
- Getting enough people to sign -up for the weekend retreat
- Hundreds of individual phone calls
- Sending mailings all over the state
- Being passionate about getting the word out led to a tremendous response.
Chapter 22 Shaktipat
- I was stunned by the experience and the power of this man. How could he possibly have such control over my energy and my metabolic functions? I felt too humbled to be in his presence. I had never felt so completely unburdened in my life. A single touch of this man can bring such transformation.
Chapter 24 The Temple Is Built
- Baba was like a wind that blew into town and permanently changed the direction of my life from one of solitude to one of service.
- Life was not the battlefield on which I was to remain conscious enough to willingly permit my old self to be stripped away.
- The intention was to build a temple.
- Estimated that building a temple would cost $8k.
- Had no idea where the money would come from.
- Money kept showing up when we needed it. Sometimes I didn’t even know where it came from.
- The amazing part was not just that money kept showing up exactly when we needed it – It kept showing up at exactly the amounts we needed to go to the next step.
Chapter 25 The Heart Chakra
- I could feel the energy building within me and rising towards my heart. It filled my heart fuller and fuller until it burst open.
- It has been more than 35 years now, and neither of these energy flows has subsided. Amrit’s hand had permanently opened up my heart chakra.
- I do not feel the need to please others. To feel compelled to join in their conversation of money, profit, and power. These people are of different vibration than me.
Section IV The Business of Surrender
Chapter 28 The Master Builder
- There is something very beautiful about not wanting to receive profits from Amrit’s retreats.
- Serving others is much higher than serving yourself.
- Learn to accept money and learn about accepting and running a business.
- A universal plan is always much more expansive than you can imagine.
- Her energy got intense; I began to quiet my breath and focus on my mantras.
- Even back then, I used my work in the world as an opportunity to let go of myself and remain calmly centred.
- To say I was humbled by the fact that I had just earned exactly the same amount of money on that very strange job would be an understatement. I saw a synchronous flow that I would never forget for the rest of my life.
Chapter 29 Community Banking
- I didn’t feel like the money was mine. I never asked for it or went out of my way for a single job.
- The jobs just came by word of mouth, one after another, and I served them to the best of my ability.
- By watching different parts of my psyche get stimulated, I could learn to let them go.
Chapter 30 The Ever-Expanding Temple of the Universe
- The transition takes place naturally when mutual resistance does not challenge change, and change feels as natural as a snake shedding skin.
- Running a business has taught them how to best make use of money for service.
- The Game of Life
- Build with love kept earning just enough money to allow us to purchase bordering properties as they came up for sale.
- It felt the people who rented at the Temple were hand-picked to show up at just the right time in their spiritual growth – and our
- Surrendering your entire life to the Universal force.
- Keep regular spiritual practices while working and supporting others to do the same.
Chapter 31 Metamorphosis of a Creature
- It is difficult to explain how sincere those men locked up in a maximum-security prison became about their inner freedom. The walls could hold their bodies, but nothing could imprison their own minds.
- We learned to listen to them in our heads and not to listen to what it says.
Section V – Something Priceless Is Born
Chapter 32 From the Personal Self to the Personal Computer
- My experience with surrender has always taught me to always be present in the current moment and do my best and not allow my personal preferences to make decisions for me.
- The formula for success was very simple.
- Do whatever is put in front of you with all your heart and soul without regard for personal results.
- Do the work as though it was given to you by the Universe itself – because it was.
Chapter 33 The Birth of The Medical Manager
- Earnings from both his businesses got donated to the Temple of the Universe, where the temple grew in property and serving the community.
- Dissolving over time mental concepts that used to separate worldly and spirited. Everything appears as the miraculous perfection of the flow of life.
- When something that seemed too large and too challenging, it is important to be honest and frank about expectations.
- If the situation still persists despite being honest and frank, then consider surrendering to the situation life is persistent on.
- You do not have to do a thing except serve with all your heart and soul what life has brought before you.
- Every day a consistent flow of inspiration let me know exactly where the program needed to go.
- The flow of inspiration was such that I was not allowed to cut a single corner. That makes the Medical Manager better than all competitive medical billing systems on the market.
Chapter 34 The Early Programmers
- Everything that you do in service – visualize that you are doing this as a gift to the universe.
- The Universe handpicked people right for the business to fully invest in the lifestyle of spirituality within the Temple and service through skill.
- Practice the perfection of the Universe.
Chapter 35 Preparing for Launch
- Surrendering to the moment, ignoring the voice in your head saying that your software isn’t good enough but instead proposing your software because you heard them mention their intention to look for something similar. Honour the flow of life.
- Offering up everything you do to the Universe.
- Feeling comfortable working with someone.
- Seeing that the people that you meet not by your own hustle are the people that is given to you by the Universal force.
Section VI – The Force of Natural Growth
Chapter 36 The Foundations of a Successful Business
- Thought driven mind and
- Thought Solution
- Inspiration driven mind
- Creative Solution
- Comes easily from a meditative state
- Creative Solution
- The more the mind is in a meditative state, the more solutions become more inspired and more self-evident.
- Despite all these outer changes, I did not become a traditional businessman.
- My spiritual path was surrendering to the flow of life
- And putting my entire heart and soul into what life was giving me to do.
- Twice daily meditation sessions certainly helped keep it all in perspective.
Chapter 37 The Industry Knocks on Our Door
- When you go with the flow of the Universe – the right people will show up right when it is needed.
- Growth takes place organically.
- Let go of personal preferences and focus on doing the absolute best I could with what life presented me. Don’t expect anything in return, and be humbled by what you see unfolding in front of you.
Chapter 38 The Temple Keeps Growing
- As I drove to Wilbur’s, I focused on remaining open and receptive to the experience at hand so that I could see where life was taking it. I am grateful that surrender taught me to participate willingly in life’s dance with a quiet mind and an open heart.
- Something that might start out looking totally disastrous ends up with a positive result.
- Time and again, I was seeing that I could handle the winds of the current storm, and they would end up blowing in some great gift.
- Storms are harbingers to transformation. When there is sufficient reason to overcome the inertia of everyday life.
- Challenging situations create the force needed to bring about change.
Section VII – When Dark Clouds Become Rainbows
Chapter 39 A Touch of Magic
- Listen to the subtle nudges instead of listening to the not-so-subtle mental and emotional reactions caused by my personal preferences. This is how I practice surrender in everyday life.
- Primary interest expressed
- Give in to subtle nudge by Universe.
- Be open to the serendipity of the situation.
- Put out your intention/effort to a manageable amount.
- … and see the Universe work and fall everything into place.
- It is important to understand what is going on inside yourself at the time.
Chapter 40 The Scart Messenger of Change
- I was living a life made by the flow of life.
- I had learned time and again that it didn’t matter if I understood what was coming at that time, but I at least knew enough to embrace whatever was taking place.
- Devote yourself to the present moment and trust that the flow of life knows what it is doing.
Chapter 41 The Foundation Is Built for the Future
- Instead of a waste dump adjoining Temple property, we could put our business there.
- All this happened while I had 25 employees and could not have possibly known that I would ever need anything like this. Apparently, life knew.
Chapter 42 Meanwhile – Back at the Ranch
- When someone is put up on a pedestal – there is likely to be a falling out with your followers.
- Situations like these are like fire, and Amit wanted to use the fire for spiritual purification.
- Completely surrendering to the experience.
- To everything, turn, turn, turn. There is a season turn, turn, turn. And a time to every purpose under heaven.
- Reality is what it is, you might as well use it to let go of the personal self.
- No matter who you are, life is going to put us through changes we need to go through. The question is: Are we willing to use this force for our transformation?
- Even every intense situation doesn’t have to leave psychological scars if we are willing to process change at a deeper level.
Section VIII – Embracing Explosive Expansion
Chapter 44 Medical Manager Corporation MMGR
- When I decided to let go and devote my life to serving what was unfolding in front of me, I earned less than 5K a year. When Build with Love came together, it grew from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands in revenue. When Personalised Programming came together, it quickly grew to millions and more than 10 million in sales and royalties. Now I was dealing with a 100million dollar assets. The invisible hand of life blew me away.
Chapter 45 Becoming CEO
- I had never worked so hard in my life. But it didn’t burn me out. In fact, it was the opposite effect. The more I let go of ‘Sheila’ and just committed myself to the task life had given me, the more the spiritual energy flow increased within me.
- By aligning myself with life’s outer flow, the beautiful inward flow of energy was naturally strengthened.
- The consistent act of letting go of one’s self-centred thoughts and emotions was all that was needed for profound personal, professional and spiritual growth.
Chapter 46 The Internet and Health Care
- I saw what transpired by taking the risk of letting go of myself.
- I was so humbled by the process that nothing in me wanted to resist ever again.
- Being deeply in love with the excitement and wonder of experiencing what would unfold next. Stay in that frame of mind throughout your days.
- It inspired me day and night. I didn’t want to eat; I didn’t want to sleep. I was driven to perfect the program, its distribution, and the support of the doctors who had entrusted their practice to us. I felt life had given me this task, and I was honoured to do it.
- Surrendering to life was my path to self-realization. I was not living a life based on what I wanted or didn’t want.
- This is Karma Yoga at its highest.
Chapter 48 Building Rome in a Day
- You can never know beforehand, you have to be ready to surrender to the flow of life.
- I found myself part of a team of executives who, instead of complaining, simply rolled up their sleeves and tackled this monumental project. Nothing was the way anybody would have wanted. Yet everyone just took a collective deep breath and did whatever was asked of them. It taught me a lesson about inner strength.
- If you let people hold you hostage, they will force you to make terrible decisions, and you will lose. You might as well take your bumps up front and at least be in control of your destiny.
- Seeing each of these intensely challenging business experiences was very beneficial for my spiritual growth.
- I just kept letting go of whatever discomfort got stirred up within me.
Chapter 49 Hanging Out in Washington
- All this exposure to intensely powerful people and situations was having a profound effect on the psyche. I watched so diligently. I had never been exposed to this powerful lifestyle.
- Nothing in me got off on in or wanted anything from it, but it did make me deal with parts of my being that I would not have faced otherwise.
- If I saw weakness, fear, or anxiety come up, I just deeply relaxed back into where I was watching from.
- As long as I made getting rid of myself my only goal, every situation was a fruitful experience.
- Life was moulding me each day to become who I needed to be to handle tomorrow’s tasks. All I had to do was let go and not resist the process.
Section IX – Total Surrender
Chapter 52 United States of America v. Michael A. Singer
- I have never been publicly disgraced before, and I noticed that it definitely stirred up the psyche.
- I knew how powerful it was to simply relax and release past that urge to defend myself.
- Stepping down from CEO divisions of Medical Manager and WebMD was also letting go of whatever resistance came up inside of me.
Chapter 53 Preparing a Defense
- Sitting quietly in that office, I could see that this terrible situation was bringing about amazing changes both inside and out. Accepting those changes was my great experiment.
- Meeting the prosecutor, she had already built a ‘Mickey Singer’ inside her head.
Chapter 54 The Constitution and the Bill of Rights
- The constitution. Reading it from beginning to end. The founding fathers were not only creating a government, they were protecting the people from it.
Chapter 55 Divine Intervention
- In the middle of the most dangerous situation of my life, the two forces in this world that I have come to have the most confidence in protecting me, Randy and Judge Blatt, were both taken away. This amazing sequence of events was so completely out of my control that I had no choice but to surrender at an even deeper level.
- When the smoke cleared and the whirlwind of life had dropped me off where she picked me up. After 40 years, I still lived in the house I had built when I moved to the woods to meditate.
Chapter 56 Returning to the Beginning
- The legal ordeal became a distant memory. It had come and gone – just like everything else. I could clearly see that because I was inwardly surrendering each step of the way, no scars were left on my psyche. Like writing on water – the impression only lasted while the events took place. Yet, in the moment of actual experience, each twist and turn reached deep inside me and forced me past fundamental fears and personal boundaries.
- Joy and pain, success and failure, praise and blame – they all had pulled at what was so deeply rooted within me.
- The more I let go, the freer I became.
- It was my responsibility to find out what was binding me that was my life’s job.
- I settled into the quiet life of increased solitude to which I once again found myself.
- How could I possibly explain the great freedom that comes from realizing to the depth of your being that life knows what it’s doing? Only direct experience can take you there.
- At some point, there is no more struggle, just the deep peace that comes from surrendering to a perfection that is beyond your comprehension. Eventually, even the mind stops resisting, and the heart loses the tendency to close. The joy, excitement and freedom are too beautiful to give up. Let go and let life become your guide, teacher, friend, and lover.
