The case of my worst gum infection

This is me in a-lot of discomfort. See my left jaw? It’s like I’m a chipmunk storing food but NO, it’s the worst gum infection I have suffered.

This picture is day 3 but it started day after Christmas, I felt like there might be something going on when this dull ache stared to feel annoying. I had to resort to popping a pain killer in the middle of the night because it was starting to bug me and have an effect on my sleep AND I’m not a very nice person without sleep. So for the sake of my children’s sanity, I took a Neurofin.

I coupled a painkiller tablet at night with lots of essential oils in the day. I used Clove, Tea Tree, Thieves. Even placed a tiny piece of cotton wool dosed with tea tea and thieves over the infected area and endured the foul taste in my mouth. *Note: my mouth never was so sanitised ever!

However, none of it worked this infection was too rooted into my gums. So by day three I felt enough was enough, I took myself to the dentist, and was on antibiotics for the rest of the week. Devon asked me while I was lying on the couch if I was (which to him probably looked like) dying and when I said no, just in a lot of pain but not dying. I swear, his words were “phew” and then walked away. Kids, love them…

Anyway here are a few thing’s that got me thinking about this ordeal that I would like to share now that my brain is finally back to “thinking” normally again.

Gargle with Warm Salt Water Early Next Time

The age old remedy was right in my kitchen the whole time. Why didn’t I think of it? Because my brain was not thinking rationally that’s why. Clove essential oil helped with numbing the pain (and stinging my lips at the same time) but it didn’t help cure the growing infection.

Article taken from Stylecraze.com talks about the process of osmosis and how it works with salt water gargling in drawing out fluids from infected tissue. Basically dehydrating the area of infection restricting the growth of the virus when it is concentrated. Gargling daily for a long period of time can effect your teeth enamel so try to keep your gargling to a minimum of 2-3 times a week or when you feel there’s an infection coming on.

Oil Pulling

Something I will start doing on a more regular basis. Also already available in my kitchen.
It involves placing a tablespoon of extra virgin organic cold pressed oil (sesame or olive oil works too) into your mouth and then swishing it around for up to 20 minutes (minimum 5 minutes) pulling it between your teeth before Spitting It Out.

With your moth home to millions of bacteria, fungi, viruses and other toxins, the oil acts like a cleanse, extracting nasties before they get the chance to spread through the body. Other benefits of oil pulling includes:

  • Teeth whitening
  • Increase in energy
  • Detoxes the body
  • Reduces headaches
  • Keeps skin clear
  • Promotes oral hygene

Floss Regularly

I hate flossing! I hate running those waxed strings between my teeth. Since my gum infection I’ve been so paranoid about food being stuck in between my teeth that now I carry with me dental floss and I run to the washroom to rinse my teeth and floss after a meal. The amount of food we have left there is shocking! So yea, floss.

Invest in a good Mouthwash

As hard as you might have brushed your teeth before bed, being asleep for 8 hours without talking or drinking or whatever, your breath is going to turn, that means the bacteria in your mouth is having a party in there. So don’t forget to couple your bed time brush with a mouthrinse as well.

Appreciate Your Pain Free Life

Another age old saying, you will not appreciate happiness unless you have experienced sadness. Same as you will not appreciate being pain free and healthy until you experience feeling weak and excruciating pain. The biggest lesson I have learned through this is the appreciation of how wonderfully blessed and perfect my life was just by being pain free. To be able to think normally and not having your mind clouded by a throbbing pain in your brain. I hope that I will always appreciate this and with this take better care of myself and my health.
