In our previous post, we talked about training our mind’s muscle memory to better catch ourselves in the present moment. That 3-second window before our knee-jerk reaction to circumstances in the outside world. But what if we can also change the way we think and what we were thought to believe, i.e changing false beliefs through one mental imprint at a time.
Old Narratives
Quote from Dr. Shefali’s – A Radical Awakening
Writing a New Narrative
“We can write new narratives for ourselves, including how we look, how and if we marry, how we parent, and for whatever choices we make. This is scary at first because we find ourselves in uncharted waters, but soon we find freedom in the process. Once we realize that culture doesn’t get to define us, we begin to take our power back. The validation we sought from others no longer means as much to us. We now ground ourselves in a new reality, one based on self-validation.”
Cultural beliefs and traditions impact our behavior which in turn, impacts the environment we live in. Taking your power back requires you to decide what new imprints do we want to base our careers, our business, or even our way of living on? Let’s say that if my intention is to attract more abundance into my life; I would first need to practice the art of receiving abundance myself. This might go against my past upbringing of coming from a state of lack – may it be either from lack of basic rights as a human being, lack of love & affection, or even a lack of money or opportunity. Abundance can show up in many ways, but if we fall back to an unconscious belief of lack, we will be contradicting our intentions and continue to live in the same old loop.
Thinking of this in another way, if you were a computer running on an old program or processor but want to be more efficient in your business with a new downloadable tool – but it can only run on an updated processing system or program – what do you do? You update the program of course – that old program might have got you through in the past but now it’s time to evolve to a newer version of yourself.
So in this sense, we start to observe the beliefs (old processor) that hinder us from living in the environment that we want to live in (the upgrade). From there we will need to start a ‘Marie Kondo’ way of living – bless and let go of all the crappy belief systems that were holding us back and start to take actions towards creating new imprints to live a life based on new beliefs. This starts with every 3second decision you make.
Setting Intentions
I know you might probably be asking what are mental imprints… I will get to that in part 3 of my blog ;). But before we touch on what mental imprints are, we first need to address – intentions. We cannot be mindful of the mental imprints we want to re-program ourselves without first putting light on our intentions. What are we doing this for? A technique I like to use which I have learned from Dr. Joe Dispenza – (a leader in neuroscience and epigenetics) is to write it down on paper. It helps to write it down and take it out of our minds (2 dimensional) and onto something tangible (3 dimensional). Once it is written down on paper, you can choose to pin it up on a wall in a room where you would frequent. Another method which we practice in Yoga in the Park would be to work with our energy in meditation to bring our intentions to the prefrontal cortex of our minds. With repeated practice – subconsciously we are setting new mental imprints towards a new future.
