I am so humbled for the opportunity to share my voice with our Vibefam partner and it’s community. In their June’s newsletter, we discuss intentions for Yoga in the Park as well as my passion as a fitness instructor.
Making Yoga Accessible to Everyone This month, we interviewed our fitfam Sheila, Founder of Yoga in the Park, to find out what inspired her to start her own movement.
Sheila started Yoga in the Park after Singapore came out of the circuit breaker last year. She had a profoundly grounding experience from her own daily practice and had a simple goal of sharing this experience with others.
Yoga in the Park was launched just after Singapore came out of the circuit breaker in 2020 Prior to starting Yoga in the Park (#YITP), Sheila had been teaching yoga as a freelance instructor in a yoga studio in Singapore.
A mother of 2 lovely boys, she started the YITP movement to help others experience the benefits of strength training and meditation through Yoga.
Yoga in the Park aims to make strength-based Yoga and meditation accessible to everyone, at all levels.
Starting Yoga in the Park involved journeying through her own personal growth and building greater self-awareness. Sheila tells us that building a safe space to allow her members to explore into their own journey was important to her. This meant a lot of inner work that had to be done so she could facilitate these safe spaces for them.
We ask Sheila the secret to starting out and building a yoga movement
It’s all about understanding who you are in the industry, finding your authentic voice and sharing your passion.
I love meeting and connecting with people from different walks of life, and being able to share my passion with others keeps me going in this journey. The best part is being able to build a lifestyle and community around what I am most passionate about!
What are her hopes & dreams for the industry?
My hope is to not sell fitness as just something we do just to look good naked (that would be a nice to have bonus) but use fitness as an opportunity to train the most important muscle we can ever possess which is our brain.
To train our brain to work in coherence with our heart and having mind body coherence while we face life’s challenging situations. With that, my hope for our YITP community is to build strong friendships that encourages love and growth.
Yoga in the Park conducts sunrise yoga and meditation sessions at Botanical Gardens. (situated close walking distance from the Bukit Timah entrance)
Step outside of your concrete confinement to enjoy the wide open space of nature, and engulf yourself in a movement and strength-based yoga practice followed by a restorative guided meditation with Sheila.
What can Members look forward to?
Yoga in the Park is starting an additional morning class! That makes YITP accessible three mornings a week! I also am going to include more ‘yoga series’ content on my website www.urbankandy.com for purchase. Bringing YITP practices to homes outside of Singapore!
This period has been challenging for many of our friends in the Fitness industry. But we all deserve some distractions, don’t we?
What keeps you up at night?
Reading. I’m always researching something and fascinated to go deeper down the rabbit hole of neuropsychology and neuroplasticity.
Other times, I love romantic movies and so I’d stay up just to watch a good romance film without any boy distraction.
